Youngsters learn respect
by the staff of the Consett & Stanley Advertiser
A CAMPAIGN has been launched in Derwentside to tackle anti-social behaviour among young people.
The idea is to build up notions of social responsibility and respect among youngsters to counteract unruly behaviour. It is called 'I Respect - We Respect' and was launched by the Green Corridor Neighbourhood Partnership in Stanley.
All young people in South Stanley, Craghead, New Kyo, Quaking Houses and South Moor will be provided with free wristbands or thumb rings bearing the 'I Respect' motto and Green Corridor staff will be working in schools and youth centres to promote the campaign.
Households in the area will also receive a copy of the seven principles of the campaign together with window stickers declaring 'We Respect'.
Shops will have the stickers displayed, local police and council workers will wear an I Respect badge or ribbon and a series of fun days will be held over the next year to help promote the initiative.
Paul Marshall, neighbourhood manager for the Green Corridor said: "This campaign offers real opportunity to make people stop and think about what matters most to them and their neighbours, respect for the people and the place we live in."
