| Stylish Motoring: The Leon's curving
roofline lends the body a more dynamic look than its two larger
siblings |
LIFE is full of compromises. There comes a time when you have to
give up the sporty image and buy a car that can carry your good
self, your partner and the kids.
Problem is, the practical vehicle in the drive is not going to
set your heart racing when you look out of the window.
It is not going to give you driving pleasure when you are to-ing
and fro-ing about your daily life.
It may fulfil a role but it won't leave you happy and contented,
but that's life, or so they tell you.
But it doesn't have to be that way. Just take a look at the new
Seat Leon, proof things are not always as they seem.
As you are trying to sell the concept to your loved one, the spec
sheet reads as follows. Yes darling, it has five seats, five doors
and a good-sized boot.
Yes it is spacious, comfortable and practical with good cruising
ability, surfeit safety features and decent economy.
Insurance costs are sensible, maintenance affordable and build
quality high.
Sounds good doesn't it?
But what you are really thinking is the Leon rocks, especially
in bright red livery with big alloys.
Here is a practical family car that looks every bit the drop-dead
gorgeous coupe.
It's lines swoop and curve back from a sleek grille.
The rear door handles are cleverly hidden in the frames giving
the Leon the appearance of a three-door coupe and as for the rump,
nice and tidy, thank you very much.
Inside is just as good. The seats take you in a body-hugging embrace
while the instruments and dash are nice and sporty, as is the small
chunky steering wheel.
Clutch and gearbox are feather-light and the 150PS 2.0 FSi motor
is rorty and sporty in equal measure.
Performance is excellent and while it cruises happily and quietly
at the legal limits, it can get there in quick order if need be.
Handling is a dream. The chassis boasts the poise and control
of the best sports saloons.
Ride is firm and body control just about perfect.
Helm responses are quick and assured.
It's a driver's car make no mistake.
The Leon offers everything to everybody, all dressed up in a package
that turns the heads for just over £15K.
Drivers and passengers can't fail to love it and there is no compromise
in sight.
