All aboard for Orient expression

THE exotic skills of the Orient are being spotlighted through an exhibition of paintings on silk and Japanese kimono.

The show has opened at the civic centre, in Stone Cross, Northallerton, and the paintings are by Richmond-based duo Jill Clay and Katie Chaplin.

The pair also own a web-based business and run talks and workshops in Japanese arts and crafts throughout the UK.

Their paintings were inspired by a trip to Kyoto last year where they met several geisha and maiko apprentices and reflect their love of traditional Japanese culture.

Hanging above visitors' heads at the exhibition are also several "uchikake" wedding kimono, as well as bolts of kimono fabric and an "obi" sash.

These items are vintage and depict lucky symbols such as cranes and flowers, hand-painted on to silk.

"The open-plan design of the building houses the hanging kimono perfectly, and they move gently in the air," said Katie.

Jill and Katie's paintings are all for sale during the exhibition, which runs until the end of next month.

Visitors can find out more about Japanese arts and culture at events between May 22 and 25, when Jill and Katie have arranged for a real geisha and maiko to perform.

As well as performances at Northallerton Forum on May 22, there will be a three-day Festival of Japan, in Swinton Park, Masham, between May 23 and 25.

Information can be found at the website www.festivalof japan.co.uk or by calling 07871 486011. Jill and Katie's artwork, as well as kimono and other Japanese items, can be found at www.vintagekimono.co.uk
