A RETROSPECTIVE of work by one of the North-East's most celebrated artists has been opened in the gallery named after him.
The display of work by Tom McGuinness was unveiled yesterday at the McGuinness Gallery, in Bishop Auckland Town Hall, County Durham
Opening the exhibition, Mr McGuiness' former tutor, Gill Holloway, said: "Tom's painting, even in the early years of his career, was absolutely remarkable - technically brilliant and so evocative.
"His work is universal. It is wonderful to celebrate Tom's work with this exhibition."
The exhibition had been planned to mark his 80th birthday later this month, but Mr McGuinness died in February as preparations neared completion.
After discussion with his family, who attended yesterday's preview and launch, organisers decided to go ahead with the exhibition to commemorate his life and art.
It features the full range of his work, including oils, etchings, lithographs and stained glass windows spanning decades, and includes some works not previously exhibited.
Mr McGuinness was born in Witton Park, County Durham, and was a miner for 39 years.
A book, called McGuinness, by GP Robert McManners and town hall manager Gillian Wales, was also launched to coincide with the exhibition.
Mr McManners said: "Tom spoke loudly and powerfully through his art. He had fierce loyalties for family, the locality of south-west Durham, his industry of coal mining, for friends and his art.
"He made political and religious commentary through his art."
The McGuinness Gallery will host the display until Saturday, April 22, and is open Monday to Friday, from 9am to 4pm, Saturdays, from 10am to 4pm, and by appointment on Sundays, from 1pm to 4pm.
