Museum hosts Power from Past display

A NORTH-EAST museum will be the venue for an an early 1900s technology exhibition.

The regional resource centre, at Beamish Museum, County Durham, is hosting the display, which features everything from pedal power to horse power and will include bicycles, horse-drawn vehicles and a 1900 Humber quadricycle.

There will also be engines, motorcycles, a restored Newcastle cart, dating from about 1890, and a 1928 SOS bus.

All the exhibits have been restored by The Friends of Beamish Museum, who will be on hand to put the various machines through their paces and to talk to visitors.

Power from the Past takes place on Sunday, followed by a May Day celebration in the museum's colliery village, featuring schoolchildren dressed in period costume, next Monday.

It begins with a May Day procession around the colliery village, at 11am, followed by a ceremony to crown the May King and Queen, as well as Maypole dancing.

The ceremony, featuring youngsters from Esh Village C of E Primary and West Pelton schools, will repeated at 12.30pm and 2.30pm.
