Museum Meccano exhibition is out of this world

MECCANO enthusiasts displayed some of their recent creations with the well-known construction kit at a popular tourism haunt at the weekend.

Visitors to Beamish Museum in County Durham were able to see the latest models produced by members of the North-East Meccano Society.

A selection of Meccano models, including a replica of the Angel of the North statue, plus Concorde and Second World War Spitfire aeroplanes whetted the appetite at the open-air museum's entrance building.

Venturing into the collections room at the museum's Regional Resource Centre, an array of all things Meccano greeted visitors.

It included a collection of working models, varying from industrial exhibits to agricultural vehicles.

Particular favourites were Meccano versions of a Dalek and K9 to appeal to fans of the revived legendary science fiction television series Dr Who.

There were also four versions of Tower Bridge, put together in each of the four colours of Meccano pieces over its 105 year-history.

Fifteen members of the society contributed to the weekend display.

Further information about its activities and future meetings is available from exhibitions secretary John Herdman, on 0191-488 6863.
