Businesses in the North-East are calling for a full public inquiry into the foot-and-mouth outbreak, to restore firms' confidence.

A Dales festival, hit hard by the foot-and-mouth crisis, is hoping audience figures this year will help balance the books.


Tuesday 5th February

£2.7bn for epidemic
The total cost to taxpayers of last year's foot-and-mouth disease outbreak, excluding defence ministry costs, is now put at £2.7bn, junior environment minister Lord Whitty said last night in a written reply.

Sheep case
A man has been charged with allowing sheep to wander from their fields when foot-and-mouth restrictions were in force. Durham County Council is prosecuting Robin Shield, of Ox Close Farm, Willington, County Durham, with breaching a Form D notice on June 20. He will next appear before Bishop Auckland Magistrates' Court on March 4.


Monday 4th February

Making hay to mark the countryside's recovery
Farmers and their families travelled to a hay show held in the region yesterday to demonstrate that country life was "alive and kicking" in the aftermath of foot-and-mouth disease.
