Disease scare
One sheep in a flock bought to restock a farm in Kirby
Stephen, Cumbria, has had to be slaughtered after blood
tests showed suspected contact with foot-and-mouth infected
animals.
The results of a further test will not been known until
next week, but the rural affairs department stressed there
had been ten "antibody positive" cases since September 30,
none of which was found to have the virus.
Mart to reopen
A North Yorkshire auction mart opens next week for the
first time since foot-and-mouth swept through the region
last year.
Friday 22nd February
FMD inquiry
The European Parliament yesterday launched its
inquiry into the Government's handling of the
foot-and-mouth crisis. A 30-member committee will look over
the next 12 months at all aspects of the outbreak. The
hearings will be held in public.
Thursday 21st February
Mart reopens to help heal farming's wounds
Thirsk Farmers' Auction Mart, in North Yorkshire, will
today be the latest to begin trading again as the region's
farming industry continues to emerge from the shadow of
foot-and-mouth.
