Why wasn't farmer shut down sooner?
The farmer at the centre of the world's worst
foot-and-mouth epidemic was yesterday convicted of failing
to report the disease in his pigs - as neighbours and
campaigners asked: "Why did it take so long to shut him
down."
Was this cruelty the start of crisis?
Judgement may have been passed in the trial which has made
the name Bobby Waugh synonymous with foot-and-mouth, but
just as many questions remain unanswered. Gavin Engelbrecht

Waugh was thrown off first farm
Bobby Waugh and his brother Ronald were evicted by South
Tyneside Borough Council from a piggery in East Boldon in
1995.
Neighbour survives but bears the scars
Cattle farmer Paul Harrison found himself at the eye of the
storm when foot-and-mouth disease was discovered at Bobby
Waugh's pig fattening unit, a quarter of a mile away from
his own farm.

Farmer 'had to have seen disease'
It was inconceivable that the farmer at the centre of last
year's foot-and-mouth outbreak could not have noticed his
pigs had the disease, a court was told yesterday.
Farming brothers are spared jail
Two farmers caught up in the foot-and-mouth crisis were
spared a prison sentence yesterday after admitting beating
a man in a drunken attack.
Park offers visitors bus ticket to ride
The Yorkshire Dales National Park says more buses than ever
are to be laid on over the summer to provide access to the
area.

Ban lifted
The Royal Agriculture Society, at the National
Agricultural Centre, in Stoneleigh, will stage competitive
sheep classes at this year's show after lifting a ban on
sheep, imposed earlier this month over fears of spreading
foot-and-mouth disease.
Monday 27th May
Big day looms for N-E section of cycleway
The latest move to place tourism back on track following
the foot-and-mouth crisis will roll into action tomorrow
when the North-East section of a national cycleway is
officially opened.
Blue Peter's Matt joins in the fun
>Blue Peter presenter Matt Baker dropped in at a young
farmers' fun day at the weekend to help judge a range
competitions.
The event, staged at Houghall College, in
Durham, was aimed at giving farmers a boost following the
foot-and-mouth crisis. Events included Land-Rover handling
and a longest worm competition.
Tourist numbers up
The number of overseas tourists
visiting the UK is rising, but the market is still down on
the period before the foot-and-mouth outbreak began,
figures reveal.
