Making A Difference

by John Dean

Making A DifferenceThe Northern Echo's community environment competition has reached a milestone with the launch of its fifth year.

Making A Difference, sponsored since its beginnings by regional development agency One NorthEast, was first staged in 1999.

The competition is open to groups or individuals involved in schemes as diverse as tidying up polluted becks, reclaiming wasteland, planting trees, creating sensory gardens, encouraging recycling, promoting energy efficiency and protecting wildlife habitats.

Last year the trophy was lifted by the Brougham Area Residents Association, for breathing fresh life into Perth Street in Hartlepool.

The previous year the prize went to the Rosedale and Victoria Allotments Association for transforming the allotments in Willington, County Durham.

Before that, the winners were the Butterwick Hospice in Bishop Auckland, for its recycling scheme, and the first winners were the volunteers striving to preserve the coke ovens of Tow Law, in Weardale.

Peter Barron, Editor of The Northern Echo, said: "I am pleased that Making A Difference is running for another year.

"It has, over the last four years, produced some remarkable stories about people working to change for the better the places where they live. I am delighted that we once more have the valued support of One NorthEast."

Mike Collier, Chief Executive of One NorthEast said; "One NorthEast are pleased to continue supporting this campaign which highlights what can be achieved by small community environmental projects.

"All the nominated schemes are superb examples of community groups working together to improve their local environment and I wish this year's entries the best of luck."

The winner of this year's competition receives £500 and two-runners-up will receive consolation prizes. The closing date is August 15, 2003.

Prizes will be presented at a date to be arranged by Professor David Bellamy, who has performed the function for the last three years.

Former entries are welcome because it gives them the chance to show the judges how their projects have progressed.

If you wish to nominate your scheme, simply print out the entry form, complete it with as much information as you want, and post it back to us by August 15.

In addition to schemes nominated by readers, some projects featured in The Northern Echo's news columns will also be entered.

After August 15, a shortlist of schemes will be chosen which will be visited by a panel of judges. Entry forms will also be printed in The Northern Echo throughout the next few months along with updates on the competition.
