Making A DifferenceCompetition could help fund projectby John Dean
A nursery which is trying to create a garden for its children has entered The Northern Echo's community environmental competition. Laurel Avenue Nursery, on the Sherburn Road Estate, Durham City, hopes to win the competition to help fund the project on a neglected piece of land next to its premises. Through fundraising, staff and parents have already been able to make enough money to start the project. Nursery teacher Hazel Woodhouse said: "We started last year, encouraging the children to grow vegetables. "We are teaching them to use the environment and the children's ideas are at the heart of the task. "An area for the children to dig and plant vegetables, as well as a butterfly garden, are amongst the ideas." Making A Difference is now in its fifth year and has been sponsored since its beginnings by regional development agency One NorthEast. It is open to groups or individuals involved in environmental schemes as diverse as improving ponds, enhancing school grounds, creating sensory gardens, encouraging recycling, promoting energy efficiency and protecting wildlife habitats. The closing date is August 15, after which a shortlist of three schemes will be visited by a panel of judges. The winner receives £500 and two-runners-up will receive prizes. Former entries are welcome. If you wish to nominate your scheme, simply print out the entry form, complete it with as much information as you want, and post it back to us by August 15. Entry forms will also be printed in The Northern Echo throughout the next three months. back | ||||||||
