Making A Difference

Residents defend title as competition begins

by John Dean

Making A DifferenceThe group which last year won The Northern Echo's community environment competition will be back to defend its title.

Members of Brougham Area Residents' Association (Bara) won Making A Difference with their efforts to transform Perth Street, in Hartlepool.

Now, as the battle for this year's title hots up, the group has again entered the competition, which is in its fifth year and is sponsored by regional development agency One NorthEast.

Making a Difference honours groups and individuals in schemes as diverse as improving their local areas or encouraging recycling.

Since winning, Bara has continued to liaise with landlords of rented properties to ensure their houses are not blighted by unsightly shutters, created more floral areas, and fitted door alarms and chains to pensioners' homes.

The scheme also heavily involves young people, and this year's initiatives have included a trip to Lightwater Valley, near Ripon, an open-air street party, and drawing classes for children.

People living in neighbouring Hurworth Street and Gray Street have also joined the project.

Bara chairwoman Muriel Boreland said: "Winning Making a Difference gave people a sense of achievement. We are delighted that people from the other streets are becoming involved. We are coming on in leaps and bounds."

The winner of Making a Difference will receive £500 and two-runners-up will receive consolation prizes. The closing date is August 15, after which a shortlist will be selected.

If you wish to nominate your scheme, simply print out the entry form, complete it with as much information as you want, and post it back to us by August 15.

Entry forms will also be printed in The Northern Echo.
