Making A Difference

Still time to scoop a £500 top prize

Making A DifferenceA scheme aimed at helping male carers is the latest entry to The Northern Echo's community competition - Making A Difference.

The competition is aimed at voluntary groups whose work improves life for other people.

Now the Fathers' Network in Darlington, organised by the SureStart and Cable organisations, has entered the competition, which has a first prize of £500 and is sponsored by regional development agency One NorthEast.

The network helps fathers, stepfathers, guardians, foster fathers, uncles and grandparents, providing self-help and mutual support.

Making a Difference is aimed at groups working in the community and has a strong environmental theme, everything from improving school grounds, enhancing wildlife habitats, planting trees, restoring hedgerows, promoting energy efficiency and supporting recycling.

Nominations already submitted have ranged from schools with strong ecological programmes to a group that created a sensory garden in Weardale.

The deadline is August 15, after which a shortlist of three schemes will be visited by a panel of judges, comprising competition administrator and freelance environment journalist John Dean, Durham Wildlife Trust Chief Executive Richard Wood and a representative of One NorthEast.

The winner receives £500 and two-runners-up will also receive prizes.

Former entries are welcome because it gives them the chance to show the judges how their projects have progressed.

If you wish to nominate your scheme, simply print out the entry form, complete it with as much information as you want, and post it back to us by August 15.

Entry forms will also be printed in The Northern Echo.
