My 14-year-old female cat has a row of small dry scabs along the back of her neck. Each one is a maximum of 4mm across. They do not seem to cause her any pain or itchiness. She is otherwise extremely happy and healthy. She eats well and does not have fleas. She is a bit overweight, but always has been. She is very happy to have the scabs scratched off. There is no wetness or blood or hair loss under or around the scabs, but they have kept coming back for a few weeks. She has never had any illness. She does not leave the house and walled garden area. Another younger cat has broken into the house a few times recently and they have hissed at each other but I have seen no real fighting. She seems happy but I am concerned about the scabs, and don't want to take her to the vet unless necessary, as she would be frightened.

There could be two possible causes for the scabs - you do not mention if they are under the collar or along the spine. I find a lot of cats get scabs under the collar when it is changed for a new one.often settling down over time, or when you remove the new collar. If the scabs are along the back, this usually indicates a perivascular dermatitis, possibly from one flea bite! you say it has been 4 weeks in duration - that being the case, i would think that your cat needs some antibiotics, at least-even though it is not annoying the cat. Sometimes supplementing the diets with primrose oil can help these dermatoses, but beware cats arre often suspicious of foreign stuff in their foods!
