Can gunea pgs have asthma? One of our guinea pigs, Zoe sometimes coughs when she is sprinting around the room, where we bring both of them out to play. She is eating more than normal but otherwise is acting perfectly normal. Her eyes and nose are clear & she is not wheezing or coughing in her cage or in the room when she is not running & jumping. She is still alert and playful and somewhat active too. My husband and I noticed that she is gaining a bit more weight, could this contribute to her coughing? We have been measuring their food out and feeding them only a certain amount each day but Zoe seems to be eating most of it. Do we need to separate Zoe and Tara until Zoe has lost the extra weight? Will this help her with her cough? Thank you for your help?

Dear Heather,
Technically, any animal can have asthma. We see a lot of guinea pigs with the cough you describe. it is very normal-due to the shape/form of their throats. Don't worry. Also they do get a bit fat! We lavish attention on them as they are so gregarious!
Best Wishes
