James went to Glasgow vet school and qualifed there in 1980. He went into mixed practice, first in Kirky Lonsdale, then up to Grantown-on-Spey, back to Lytham-St.Annes then to Mold.
After gaining extensive experience in these practices over the first eight years of practice life, he moved to Marske-by-the-Sea in Cleveland in 1988, and bought his practice in 1989.
Marske Vets is predominantly a small animal practice, which has expanded from one vet to three. Vets take eye referrals (James is the consultant ophthalmologist) and hopes to soon take skin referrals.
The practice does a wide variety of work with all types of small animals and works closely with rescue organisations such as the RSPCA, dogs trust, cat orphanage, Cats Protection League.
Marske Vets is the practice vets for Saltburn animal rescue. James has been the radio vet for Radio Cleveland for more than 10 years and has been involved in live phone-ins, debates and advice lines with the station.
