I have two female rabbits they are siblings and were bought together at a young age. Recently they have started to mate each other and are pulling hair out of each others backs. They are also putting hair in their bed. One keeps trying to mount the other one. They dont seem to be aggressive to each other and are affectionate to each other grooming and licking each other. What would suggest I do, should I get them spayed? Would this stop them trying to mate? I have two other female rabbits in another cage and they have no problems like this. I have also read that if you dont get them spayed they will develop cancer by five year old. Would you advise getting all four rabbits spayed?

Dear Lindsey
Bunny Burrows always advises both male and female to be spayed or neutered. Primarily for health reasons but also for behavioural reasons. Under normal circumstances we would not advise that same sex bunnies are paired together. The problems that are being encountered have arisen from this issue. There is always the exception to the rule, i.e. the other pair of females. Spaying may solve the problem with the troublesome pair but there is no guarantee. Either way, Bunny Burrows believes that bunnies should be spayed and neutered.
