Murton out to extend unbeaten record against neighbours

By Malcolm Pratt

Murton field their strongest line-up as they attempt to extend an unbeaten record to 14 games when they meet neighbours Easington.

The reigning champions have won six and drawn seven of their fixtures and enjoy a narrow lead over Castle Eden at the top, but will be wary of their visitors who have matchwinners in their line-up, especially professional David Kennedy.

Easington's chances are boosted by the return of Stuart Wilson, Gary Ward and Peter Booth but David Young and Russell Tarn cannot play. Russell's brother David is included.

Murton are unchanged from the side which drew twice last weekend.

Castle Eden are hot on the heels of the leaders and they show no alteration despite losing one of their two fixtures in last week's double-header.

They visit Bill Quay who are still in a comfortable position despite failing to sustain early-season form.

Seaham Park need a good result at home to Boldon CA if they are to keep the pressure on the leaders and are hopeful that Alan Dickwill be able to turn out.

Boldon make changes. David Downs comes in for Neil Crooks and Stuart Johnson replaces Andy O'Connell.

Ryhope are disappointed with their form but delighted at the progress of their junior sides which they are confident will shape the future of the club.

Last weekend, Lee Gilbert hit a magnificent 174 in the second team game against Dawdon, while Kristian Summerside had a hat-trick when he took six wickets for just nine runs in the match with Murton the next day.

The pair are knocking on the door for a first-team place but are again named in the seconds to meet Easington at Bill Quay tomorrow in the final of the Ralph Walton Cup.

Ryhope travel to Peterlee this afternoon and the only change is the inclusion of Craig McGrath for Ian Douglas. Peterlee enjoy the luxury of fielding full-strength sides at both first and second-team levels.

Captain David Coates cannot play for Dawdon and Keith Laws deputises at Houghton who have a lot to make up if they are to avoid the wooden spoon. Despite some encouraging performances, Houghton have yet to taste success.

Silksworth won both games last weekend and at home to Washington make changes. Adam Fairley, Glen Davison and Philip Middlemiss make way for the returning Stephen Wright, Ian Laverick and Mark Jones.

Washington bring in Andy Gibson and Steve Bilton for the unavailable John Mitchell and Matthew Garrod.
