Lyons extend their leadBy Bob GidneyHetton Lyons remain top of the the table and their lead was extended with South Hetton beating Whitburn. Despite drawing with Burnmoor, the Lyons were indebted to neighbours South Hetton when they took all 20 points at Whitburn with a competent all-round performance. They were quickly among the Whitburn batting and Paul Shields was the only batsman in the first five to reach double figures. John Pendlington (3-46) and David Wilkinson (3-21) caused havoc as Whitburn were reduced to 65 for five. Middle order resistance came from Michael Smith (36) and Andrew Turns. However, John Leslie's introduction brought him three wickets and Whitburn were bowled out for a modest 143 in the final over. Pendlington (35) and Gary Burlinson ensured there would be no slip-ups when 82 came from their opening partnership. The latter ended unbeaten with a match-winning 70 that included 11 boundaries and one six. Hetton Lyons gave little away in the draw with Burnmoor. After losing Shaun Birbeck early there was a bright second-wicket partnership that saw Marc Hopkinson (55) and Michael Walker add 81 in 79 minutes. Walker (72) then adding 68 with Graham Hoban and the Lyons ended on 217. Burnmoor, without opener Barry Dews who was a late withdrawl with chicken pox, lost Gary Brown with the score on five. When the last hour arrived the Moors score stood at 70 for three and the final total proved too distant. Durham City won their first match of the season when they beat Seaham Harbour by a convincing eight wickets. Martin Gill's 46 was the only contribution of note for Seaham with Colin Myers picking up four wickets. City replied postively. They needed just 31 overs to reach their target with Matt Houghton hitting 65 and Tom Meredith unbeaten on 36. South Shields won their derby against Boldon by a handsome 103 runs. Skipper Michael Fishwick led by example at a crucial time when the Shields batting looked as if it was going to collapse. Fishwick and Lindsay Cullen (60) added 104 and Shields looked set for an early declaration. Boldon struck back and Shields slumped to 121 for five. Fishwick was joined by Neil Dixon (30) and the pair added 73 in 56 minutes to help take Shields' final score to 222. Fishwick's contribution was an unbeaten 109. His side made slow progress initially and when the final hour commenced, Boldon were 76 for two and the game appeared to be going nowhere. Shields juggled their bowlers around to good effect. Veteran Alan Stevenson (3-13) proved a useful introduction and Johnny Wightman ended with 5-56. Shields had eight balls left in the game when Wightman clinched the final wicket. Horden recorded their first win since mid-May when they beat Felling. Graham Wright (42) and Darryl Warden (32) added 82 in 58 minutes for the fifth wicket for Felling but Carl Watson (4-39) and Nadeem Khan (3-44) were always in control. The Horden reply saw Khan (59 not out) again in the thick of things. He added 86 for the third wicket with Min Mahil (40) and Horden won comfortably by seven wickets. Eppleton ran out winners by eight wickets against Marsden. Despite a half century from Mark Scott and 39 by Philip Bell, Marsden were unable to come to terms with Stuart Lacey (4-32). Chasing 159 to win, Eppleton professional Sean Ezzard cracked 11 boundaries in his 69. With excellent support from David Lowther (55 not out), Eppleton needed just 27.5 overs for victory. Back |
