When Dan King and Tony McMahon played together for Staindrop Comprehensive School's football team, few could have predicted the different routes their careers would take. While McMahon has to make do with playing in the Premier League for Middlesbrough, King has gone on to enjoy a glittering career in The Northern Echo Darlington Sunday Invitation League with RAC Football Club.
Well it has won one anyway - the highly prestigious Northern Echo Darlington Sunday Invitation League Columnist of the Year 2004/2005, where it beat off competition from, erm, nobody. Dan joined The Northern Echo in 2005 having honed his writing skills as one of Britain's youngest football fanzine editors, producing Darlington fanzine Where's The Money Gone? at a time when another aspiring writer, a Mr Pete Doherty, was editing QPR's All Quiet on the Western Avenue. The Babyshambles singer is another one that Dan can look down upon, grateful
that he has left him behind. After all, who wants to sleep with Kate Moss
and front rock groups when you can write about garden fetes, jumble sales
and Sunday morning football for a living? |
